The Kapunungan sa mga Bisaya sa Austria (KBA) proudly marks its 36th anniversary, celebrating more than three decades of unity, cultural pride, and service to both the Filipino community in Austria and communities back home in the Philippines.

What began as a small gathering in front of a restaurant in Vienna in March 1989 has since evolved into one of the most active Filipino-Visayan organizations in Austria. Inspired by a desire to connect with others from their homeland, a few Visayans envisioned forming an organization that would bring together their fellow kababayans.

โ€œBay, kadaghan god diay nga Bisaya sa Vienna. Unsa kaha no, magtukod ta og Kapunongan?โ€ One of them suggested words that would spark the creation of KBA.

A Vision Takes Root

On June 1, 1989, the founding members met at the Afro-Asian Institute in Vienna to formalize their plans and draft KBAโ€™s official constitution. Their vision was to create more than a social circleโ€”they sought to build a community that would preserve Visayan culture, foster solidarity among migrants, and extend compassion to those in need.

Through the years, KBA has become a cornerstone for the Filipino diaspora in Austria. It has hosted cultural festivals, community gatherings, and outreach activities that promote Filipino heritage and strengthen ties among members.

Commitment Beyond Borders

KBAโ€™s influence extends far beyond Austria. The organization has consistently supported charitable causes in the Philippines, including educational scholarships for underprivileged children and fundraising initiatives for disaster relief. These projects reflect the groupโ€™s enduring commitment to compassion and serviceโ€”values that remain at the heart of KBAโ€™s mission.

A Milestone Celebration

The 36th Anniversary Celebration, held on October 18, 2025, was a joyful tribute to KBAโ€™s enduring legacy and to the dedication of its leaders and members over the years. The event honored the organizationโ€™s founders and all who have contributed to its growth, highlighting stories of resilience, generosity, and community spirit.

Looking Ahead

As KBA looks to the future, it continues to inspire Filipinos in Austria and beyond. What started as a small dream has become a thriving organization that unites people across continents and generations.

โ€œKBA stands as a symbol of the Visayan spiritโ€”resilient, compassionate, and deeply connected to its roots,โ€ said Alex Chiong, one of the former leaders of KBA. โ€œWe celebrate our past with pride and look forward to the future with hope.โ€

Congratulations to the Kapunungan sa mga Bisaya sa Austria on 36 years of meaningful service, cultural pride, and community solidarity. May the organization continue to thrive and make a lasting difference for generations to come.
